Mod Block Log Cabin Mini

I love mini quilts because you can work on something new without a lot of commitment in time or materials. In this case I decided to work with some different colors than I would usually put together. I went to my scraps, started to pull and wound up with this bunch of purple, orange, yellow and reds...

... and here's what I came up with...

I love how the round log cabin block looks, it's a nice modern take on a classic.  I used the River Log Cabin pattern in the Mod Block issue of Block magazine from Missouri Star.  I quilted with straight lines, a little closer in the middle and gradually farther apart towards the outside.  I love that I got to experiment with color and quilting for this quick finish!

Interlock Update

I've been making a lot of progress with my king sized Interlock quilt.  This is one of my first quarter Finish-A-Long projects.  So far I've got everything cut...all 895 pieces, 45 blocks worth.  I've sewed and pressed all of the B part strips and sewed most of the A part strips.  I'm going to keep them separate so that I can lay each part out. I'm using two Jelly Rolls plus other yardage for the prints so I want to make sure everything gets evenly distributed.  After this, I'll start sewing the strips to each other...this is a LONG project!

Housewarming

Another set of quick projects that I made using scraps.  Sometimes it's nice to just put something together and see how it goes.  My brother and his wife bought a new house in Florida and they are doing a lot of renovations.  I gave them this at Christmas so they would have something for their new kitchen when they went to the house over the break.  As you can see, once again I went for the tried and true tossed nine-patch.  Still practicing my FMQ stipple...might need to master some other motif soon!

2016 Finish-A-Long Quarter 1

I'm not a big fan of resolutions, but I like the low risk opportunity to set some penalty free goals, so I'm joining the 2016 Finish-A-Long.  Here's my hopeful list for Quarter 1!

Interlock King Size Quilt using this pattern  by Amy Friend and Persimmon fabric by Basic Grey for Moda.

Mini quilts, at least one,  maybe two or three.  I completed one over the Christmas break, but I'd like to make a few more.  Right now I'll aim for one from the Cluck Cluck Sew booklet and one of the Off The Rail.  I have a stack of Anna Maria Horner prints from a few lines, and some Carolyn Friedlander that I'll be using for these.

And lastly, I'd like to finish one of my four quilt tops from 2015.  This requires getting more comfortable with my own machine quilting skills and being more confident in deciding how to quilt them.

Post Christmas Wrap - Up

I have one project to share this week that was a present that I couldn't post before.  Last year I made so many handmade gifts for people for Christmas.  This year I really kept my gift making expectations in check. Every time I thought, 'I'll just make something for them', I got my wits and stopped myself and I didn't feel guilty about it.  I focused on a few people that I wanted to make things for and it was a success.  Less stress is always a good thing, and you don't want to turn what you enjoy into an obligation.

One person I did make a lot of things for was my Mom, which I shared previously here and here. The last thing I made was this divided basket, which is another wonderful pattern from Anna Graham at Noodlehead.  I used Lori Holt's Vintage Happy and Modern Minis lines for the fabric.  When I got the Modern Minis I couldn't believe that there was a panel that had You Are My Sunshine on it...bonus, as this is the song my mom always sang to me growing up.

Interlock...Ready, Set, Go!

I'm excited to get to WIP Wednesday this week!  I've had a quilt in mind for a while now, actually since last November when I stopped by During Quiet Time and saw Amy Friend's Interlock quilt.  I loved the design and I also loved the fabric she used, Persimmon by Basic Grey for Moda.

The pattern was in the Winter 2015 issue of modern patchwork, so I picked that up right away. Luckily (or unluckily for Interlock) there were other great patterns in that issue and I wound up getting distracted and making this quilt.

Fast forward to last week and I finally decided it was time to get started on Interlock...

Yes, this is two Jelly Rolls I'm cutting.  I've worked out new cutting instructions because I am going for broke on this one and aiming to make myself a new king sized bed quilt for my husband and I. Wish me luck!

BTW - You can now get the pattern individually on Amy's website if you are interested.
